Some things to know about NAS Pensacola

We've been here a week tomorrow and today was the first day we really got out to see anything.  Between the visitors and the rain we only managed to get to the museum on Sunday for a couple of hours.

A little background:  Roger and I were stationed here way back in the mid-60s to go to the Naval School of Photography.  We were not in the same class, nor did we know each other at the time, but we do have some of the same memories of our experiences here.  Of course the base has changed tremendously in the almost half a century since we went to school, but many things are the same, especially in the area we are staying, as the school (which no longer exists, nor does the rating of of photo mate, for that matter) was just up the street from here.  We spend a lot of time walking down memory lane.

Today we got out for our first long walk in a month.  It felt really good.  The weather cooperated, although a cold front moved in behind those storms yesterday and it was fairly cool and and windy. Sweat shirts and long pants were comfortable.  I think Maggie liked stretching her legs, too.

From the RV park we walked along the jogging trail past the
Pensacola Lighthouse, past the Naval Aviation Museum and Fort Barrancas

.

Please check out the links above for more information and history on these landmarks. they are all quite interesting and important to this area.  Roger and I spent many hours in Fort Barrancas taking photos of window slits, walls, corridors, light and shadow, learning perspective, and lots of stuff I, at least, have forgotten over the years about photography.

Across the street from the jogging trail is also a row of
VERY SENIOR officer houses.

The RV park is across the road from the Blue Angels' home field.  They practice their show on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and we can definitely hear them and sometimes see them in between the trees. This morning I had Maggie down close to the beach at the time of the practice session and we had a great view of the aerobatics.  Tomorrow we plan on going over to the air field and watching from there so we can see the whole show.  I hope for some nice pictures to share with you.

We have a nice site
 - not the best in the park (maybe next time) -
but we will be quite comfortable
 for our month here.
