Prepping For Our Summer Journey

I hate to say it out load for fear of jinxing ourselves, so will write it instead:  No problems surfaced today setting up the RV for the first time in 14 months!   Yay!  It felt good to pull away from the storage area this morning and into a local RV park.  We both have been suffering some nerves, though, as if it were our first time - only now we know what could go wrong, so it made the nerves worse.  All systems seem to be working and we are just about ready for our summer trip.

Unfortunately, we had to evict some poor birds who had nested in the hitch. We couldn't believe the amount of material stuffed into such a tiny space - it smelled like sagebrush!  At least we didn't find eggs or babies.

We parked the RV in the storage space after our trip to Long Beach for Stephanie's graduation from Long Beach State.  I saw the calendar this morning and felt as if I were in a time warp!

The last day in May of last we got a phone call from the manager of the storage place. What a mess!  Glass everywhere.  Kids threw rocks through windows of several of the RVs. Of course, no security cameras were working in the RV area. We had an auto glass company come out and put in a new window.  We were unable to get inside to clean up the mess because we couldn't open up the slides due to RVs on both sides of us. So, my first chore today was to clean up the glass.  It took a long time. I thought the vacuum was sucking the glass up pretty well and then I dumped the canister.  No glass.  Hmmm.  Where did it go?  I turned the vacuum over and out it all came - back onto the carpet.  I guess the filter on the vacuum doesn't allow large objects to pass through.  Dustpan and brush for the big pieces, then the vacuum seemed to do the trick with the minute slivers.  We just won't be going barefoot and hope that Maggie doesn't pick up any slivers either.

After the vandalism incident we decided that our house on wheels was looking a little rough and worn on the outside as the gel coat surface had oxidized very badly.  We splurged and had a real expensive detail job done and it looked pretty good.  So, how to keep it that way?  A cover.  An expensive cover.  After a horrible time putting it on and me going crazy because Rog had to work on the roof, we thought we had found the solution.  Looks as if it should work!  Right?  Well, Nevada is known for high winds and of course the cover is not designed for high winds, nor is it covered warranty-wise.  The cover was ripped to shreds -  lesson learned!!!

Maggie recognized her other home right away and found her toy basket with toys she had forgotten about.  She was entertained while we put away clothes and dry goods, put batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and did an inventory of what we had already in the RV.   Roger had the hard work - on the outside in the sun (It never fails when it is hot that the hookups are on the sunny side of the RV.)  We are not staying there tonight, will sleep at home.

Friends stopped by for a few minutes this afternoon to wish us a safe and fun journey and they brought goodies for the trip - some very delicious oat bars that we sampled tonight.  The rest we will save for when we are on the road.  Thank you, Chuck and Tica!!!

Tomorrow we make groceries and move the refrigerator food over to the RV.  After we have a shower at home and make sure everything is secure here, we will move into the RV for the night.

We are relaxing a bit now that we remember how things work - kinda like getting back on a bicycle after years of not riding!
