It's Saturday evening and we’ve been at the Air Force Academy FamCamp (RV park) since mid afternoon on Thursday. I’ve not been able to publish anything because there is no wifi here and the hotspot on my phone isn’t strong enough to connect. We discovered today that if we use the hotspot on Roger’s phone (he has an Android) that the computer will recognize it. Here’s the plan - I’m going to catch up with the journal tonight by writing it in a document and then will cut and paste it into blogspot. There are no photos, so it should be a piece of cake.
Thursday - 21st - We drove from Laramie, WY to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. About 200 miles.
It was the shortest day of the four days on the road and we got in mid afternoon. We got through Denver traffic OK - it was pretty heavy and there were some slow spots, but no stop and go. We checked in at the registration office here at the campground, paid our fees, got a map to the site we were assigned and then things got a little crazy. When I made the reservations 60 days ago (per the rules for retired folks) I told them we had a 38 foot rig with four slides and we needed 50 amp service. They put us in one of the 4 (out of 100s sites) that only had 30 amp and was too short. There’s a tree right where we need to put the awning out for shade.
We could deal with the short site (we just hang over a bit in the back to make the front end not hang out into the road). Rog got the rig in to the site and we dropped the RV, leveled it, and proceeded to hook up the utilities. We had to judge where we parked according to the length of the water hose as the spigot is situated way to the back of the site and the connection to the RV is close to the front. OK, well we got that figured out and parked accordingly. Then Roger opened the electric box and discovered it was only 30 amp service. A few words flew around - ones not repeated here. He went down to the registration office, waited in a line of others registering, and was told that there was no other site they could move us to as the campground was full this weekend.
So, we’ve been “roughing” it a bit - we can only use one air conditioner (we have two) and if it’s on we can’t use anything else that pulls power such as a toaster, coffee maker, vacuum cleaner, etc. We have to turn off the A/C to use them. Ok, we can do that. Then we discover that we have no wifi or tv service here in the woods. We keep having to remind ourselves that we are in a campground - people come here to camp, not live in their RV. We have been here twice before but didn’t remember the wifi/tv issues. Oh, well. I must admit we are spoiled and prefer the RV lifestyle to the camping lifestyle.
Friday, 22nd - Academy FamCamp
I did a couple of loads of laundry Friday morning. Those clothes that had gotten soaked in the shower debacle were starting to sour so I needed to get them washed. There is a nice laundry room not too far away. I always meet and talk to other ladies doing their laundry and get to hear stories about others’ travels. Doing laundry in an RV park is a social experience.
Pam came over to see us late morning and spent the day hanging out with her folks. We went out to lunch, then to the commissary to buy food to feed us this weekend. It’s good to see her and she has been trying to get Maggie to be her BFF, but Maggie’s not so sure about that. She’ll play with Pam, sit in Pam’s lap, but won’t let Pam take her for a walk. She just sits right down and won’t move unless I come along. Pam stayed for dinner and we had a nice afternoon catching up.
We’ve discovered that the propane smell that gave me such a headache in Sparks was not caused by their propane dispensing area but by a slow leak that we have. Not good. Roger has been working on the problem but as of this writing the problem hasn’t been solved. He’s been able to shut the valves on the tank, so at least now we are safe and not breathing in the fumes.
Saturday - 23rd - Academy FamCamp
Roger, Maggie and I had a nice long walk around the entire campground this morning, checking out the RVs. It’s a little irritating to see little pop-up trailers in a large spot with 50 amp service, but so be it. We also spent an hour or so making plans for our trip when we leave here. No one can believe that we didn’t have this whole trip planned already! My criteria is that I need to go someplace I haven’t been before. So, we have a plan for the next week. Stay tuned to see where we will be going. We leave on Tuesday morning.
Pam came over about the same time today, and again we closed up the RV, turned on the AC, put Maggie inside and went off to lunch. Today we found a Camping World and got a few things we needed and a few we didn’t. Rog found a coupling for the propane tank in hopes that was where the leak was, but when we got home it was the wrong size. We went in search of a propane company to check our tank to see if it was OK (we brought it with us), but the two places we tried were closed (on Saturday?). We ended up at a U-Haul store where we filled the tank and the attendant and Roger sprayed some liquid on the valves to check for bubbles but didn’t get any. This probably tells us, it’s one of the connectors and not the tank. So, tomorrow, back to Camping World to return the fitting and try to find the right size.
Tomorrow we expect Pam and Ben (he finally has the day off) to come for a picnic lunch and for Ben to help Roger figure out the propane issue. I’ll take pictures to share and will hopefully be able to upload them into the blog.
The weather has been very warm - in the mid 90s until around 4pm when thunderstorms roll through the area and it rains and cools it down somewhat. The nights are cool and the place is quiet and dark so sleeping has not been an issue. There is a train that runs through the base and we sometimes here it as it goes through. The neighbors are quiet and we are at the back of the campground so we have woods behind us, which makes a nice view out the back windows.
